The painting depicts Maria of Bulgaria, daughter of Tsar Kaloyan and Latin Empress of Constantinople. She is depicted as a young and majestic woman wearing a golden headdress, a symbol of her nobility and influence. Her face is filled with bright and dynamic colors, which emphasizes her role in the turbulent historical events of the 13th century.
Maria is a key figure in the relations between the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and the Latin Empire, created after the Fourth Crusade (1202–1204).
